Offered in this listing is a group of three fine examples of vintage Mingei pottery of Mashiko, Japan, attributed to Hamada Shoji (1894-1978). There are no boxes.  Exceptional abstract designs in persimmon glaze set off against a dark iron background.  Please note the many images of the pieces showing the backs and foot rims in great detail.
The plates were acquired by us from an advanced collector's estate. He was a physician who studied in Japan.  Unfortunately, of the dozen or so pieces of vintage Japanese studio pottery in his collection, only one fully intact box and several parts of boxes remained, as the heirs probably did not know the significance of the boxes.  While these pieces seem to our admittedly inexpert eye to bear the hallmarks of the master's techniques, his works fall outside of our areas of expertise, thus we will leave it to potential buyers to ascertain attribution to the best of their knowledge.  Please examine the many close-ups showing item details. I find it interesting that Hamada felt that signatures were unnecessary, as the quality of his work should speak for itself.  Thus it seems that many collectors will require a box, while the true connoisseur will be able to examine images closely and ascertain to his or her satisfaction authorship of a piece. If you do not like the price, feel free to make an offer, which we will thoroughly consider.

: Each plate measures 7 3/8 inches in diameter and stands 1 1/4 inches high.
CONDITION
: Fine, with no chips, cracks, or repairs.
